English is currently spoken by one in four of the world's total population for business, science, technology, education, international relations, and diplomacy, although those who speak it natively are relatively small in number. The phenomenon shows the important role of Englsh in the globalization era. More and more nations, including Indonesia, need a global language to communicate with each other. For the Indonesian government, the need to use an international language besides its national language is indispensable. Therefore, the national policy of education should consider adopting English as a second language (L2) for education especially in science and technology by establishing bilingual education. This propgram is expected overcome the failure of English teaching. In terms of methodology, using English as a medium of instruction in education is an implementation of content-based approach, which is compatible to second language acquisition. This paper discusses the advantages of a bilingual education in promoting second language acquisition. Adopting English as an official L2 is a strategic alternative in developing learners' L2 competence since it is rich in comprehensible input.
