The use of metaphor in Sasak daily encounters appears to be unavoidable, as is well recognized in other communities (Gibbs, 1994, Lakoff and Johnson 1980). Interestingly, in the Sasak community, metaphor seems to function as part of expressing identity as speaking directly to the addressee might embarrass one's feelings. The use of metaphor therefore is considered natural and embedded in Sasak wacana. This paper presents an analysis of the use of metaphor in the Sasak community based on extensive participant observation.
