This article explores the implementation of Communicative Approach on Teaching English at SMU Padang. It was found that English teachers developed the instructional materials based on the themes suggested in BCO-Curriculum 1994 by choosing the sub-themes available in the textbooks. Teachers have some difficulties to integrate the four language skills for they have been familiar with the discrete way. As a whole, they have implemented the Communicative Approach albeit they lack the ability to integrate the components and skills in the teaching-learning process. To measure the students' achievement, the teachers used written tests and portfolio assessment.
