Isi artikelThe Nasal Translative and the Zero Transitive clause types in Balinese exhibit different word order tendencies. Pivot and non-pivot arguments in Nasal Transitive clauses (NTC) can be preverbal or post-verbal, but in Zero Transitive clauses (ZTC) only the pivot can be placed in either the pre-verbal or post-verbal position. Overall figures show that the frequency of pivot initial order in NTC is much higher than in ZTC. When two overt arguments occur in an NTC, the pivot initial order is still much more commonly used than the verb initial order. Thus, pivot initial order is the unmarked order while verb initial order is the marked order in NTC. Within two overt arguments in ZTC, on the other hand, the frequency of verb initial order is slightly higher than the pivot initial order. Balinese seems to have a pattern of lexical distribution which depends on grammatical role. There is a strong tendency to use lexical arguments to be S or O, but a weak tendency for them to be A. This lexical distribution shows a pattern of ergative obsobsolutive constructions. Thus, if a single lexical argument is used in a transitive clause, it is more likely to occur as O rather than A.
