This paper attempts to look into the typical rhetorical structure of a khotbah (sermon) as a prototypical example of a religious genre. The analysis was carried out using the communicative purpose analysis model of text segments called genre analysis as stipulated by Swales (1990). A taxonomy of rhetorical structure of sermon suggested by Cheong (1999) was used as guidelines. The results show that a text of khotbah consists of at least four parts: opening remark, introduction, body, and closure. Each part is composed of several moves and each move is characterized by the use of various rhetorical functions and specific lexical items. The text is also characterized by a heavy use of quotation from Hadis and Alquran as a strategy for effective argument and persuasion used by the Khotib. However, this paper is only an explorative attempt to look at the rhetorical structure of a member of religious genre (khotbah).
