The article focuses on the semantic relations in the two word utterances of a child observed between the age of 1 ;7(13) through 1;9(22). It was found that (a) the child produced 171 two word utterances with an increasing speed, (b) in general the semantic relations conform to what Brown has suggested, (c) word order seems to playa basic syntactic role, and (d) vertical constructions developed earlier than the horizontal ones. It can tentatively be concluded that semantic developed earlier than syntax.
