Isi artikelThe paper considers variation in the colloquial speech of educated people in Jakarta, based on a corpus of about 142,000 words. Social contexts include very informal, somewhat more formal, and formal still, all situations involving unplanned spoken language. All variation looked at involves word usage, except for consideration of one aspect of verbal affixation. The data show that features normally associated with formal language are rarely entirely absent from informal speech and that even in formal unplanned spoken contexts informal elements occur. While there is variation according to the degree of formality of the social context, the shift from informal variants to formal variants does not occur at a uniform rate as the situation becomes more formal. In some cases the informal variant is surprisingly frequent in more formal situations, while in other cases the informal variant virtually disappears. Thus while Indonesian exists in a diglossic state there is no clear dividing line between the two styles with a distinct set of features associated with it. The study also reveals that although averaging over groups of people shows a shift to more formal variants in more formal contexts, there is nevertheless a great deal of unpredictability as to which variants individual speakers of similar social background will use in particular social contexts.
