The purpose of this article is to examine the use of language as a means of communication in two different cultures: a low-context culture and a high- context culture. In a low-context cultwe the mass of information is expressed in the explicit code; therefore, verbal skills are necessary and valued highly. In a high-context culture, on the contrary, more of the information is either in the physical context or internalized in the person. Therefore, verbal skills are considered suspect. Indonesia is a country with a highcontext culture. So, confidence is not significantly placed in a verbal aspect of communication.
