Isi artikelThis article traces aspects of Indonesian as used in the print and electronic media from the Soeharto era up to the present. Language in the media during the Soeharto era was a means used by the power holders to construct public opinion and in turn to shape events. The language in the immediate post-Soeharto period was characterized by a great deal of criticism of the people who inherited power from the 'New Order'. It is concluded that the lessening of the grip of such language on society can be achieved through a process of persuasive social control. Communication in society and social control cannot be achieved without language.
