Seeing or reading people and events on the news seem to be a routine activity for everyone. Out of the 16 pages or so of newspapers one of the favorite item is the sport section. At that sect on we are being informed of the sports update, progress, and each of the individual, the grand slam, championships, meets or any sporting events. We have seen how Gabriella Sabatini, Steffi Graf or the controversial Monica Seles are constantly on the news - sometimes on the front page swinging their racquets. We have also seen Tanya Harding battered by the media without a chance of showing her swing on ice. How well, prestigious track & field players such as Torrence, Joyner, Kersee, and May are also given extra attention to their personality and taste. This phenomena rises questions: How much news have and should the media cover? How well in-depth should the media touch personal attitudes as a part of the athlete's successful and not successful career? This of course comes back to the question if the sport itself wants as many publicity it can get or not. |
