Isi artikel
Rodgers and Rowe (1988) used the Adolescent Sexuality (ADSEX) data to show that younger siblings are systematically mate sexuality active at a given age teen older siblings. The current study uses national data- -the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth (NLSY)-IO further explore this .relationships. First the NLS Y data set is analyzed to determine if the local patterns in the ADSEX data replicate within a national data set; the NLSY data do suggest the same birth order results as the ADSEX data. Second, several process oriented models to explain this phenomenon are proposed, and tested by inspecting patterns of sexual activity in relation to family structure patterns. One artifactual model and three explanatory models are investigated, including a telescoping hypothesis, an older sibling modeling of behavior hypothesis, an older sibling modeling of behavior hypothesis, and a physical maturation hypothesis. Very slight support for an opportunity model is found for white older sisters and white younger brothers. Stronger support for a maturational interpretation is obtained. Other potential explanatory processes are discussed.
