Human society is an ordering of men in reference to a common goal. Furthermore, since in order to live in harmony with one another men must be governed by a law that will ensure of facilitate the attainment of the good common to all men. Consequently, there is essential continuity between moral, social, political, economic and legal activities. Society materially is no more than the sum-total of individuals in it and no different from it. Formally, however it is obviously something different. The individual must be a person, i.e. a subject of responsibility. He should be an egoist, because he is related to society by his very nature: only throughjustice (and love) can an individual attain his own happiness. Therefore, the state should be the servant of society. Aquinas’ Zviews are relevant in the first place because they raise the most fundamental questions about politics: the purposes of society, government, and law. They are especially relevant because they link political organization to moral virtue in general and to social justice in particular. And in the second place they are relevant because they treat questions of political obligation as questions of moral obligation. Accordingly, the purpose of this article, then, is to indicate Aquinas’ views on political obedience. (Upload Full-Text_Ali-Nov'2023)
