This paper addresses whether structural factors or family socialization processes are stronger correlates of attitude consensus between mothers and their adolescent children regarding maternal em- ployment. Scholars have long debated whether attitude similarity is caused by family socialization or environmental context in which both parents and children are located. Results, however, have been inconsistent. Using the National Survey of Children, this paper employs log-linear and regression models to show that attitude similarity regarding consequences of meternal employment for family life is moderately strong. However, it does not vary substantially by salient background or socialization factors. Findings suggest that gender-role socialization may be more nuanced and complex than scholars previously believed and that the social learning model may be useful in further studies of gender formation.
