Isi artikelCitric acid is one of the largest acids produced by fermentation process. Recovery of citric acid from fermentation broth is usually done by solvent extraction. Nowadays several researchers have investigated the use of electrodialysis as an alternative technology to overcome drawbacks of solvent extraction. Voss has comapred three alternative electrodialysis processes to deacidification of citric acid using both monopolar and bipolar membranes. His results show that eletrodialysis process using combination of anion exchange membrane and bipolar membrane gives the best result, since the current efficiency of this process is high and no deacidification caused by diffusion. In this research, electrodeionization technique is used to recover citric acid from its solution. This technique combines electrodialysis and ion echange, which does not require resion regeneration. Electrodeionization technique could recober citric acid almost 3 times from feed concentration. From the experiment it has been found that the optimum feed velocity was 0,3125 cm/s, which has given maximum percentage for recovery. The difficulties to find limiting current has been described, too.
