Isi artikel
'Business English' is a term more widely used among practitioners than theorists. It is used to describe courses run by language schools, colleges and universities worldwide; three examining boards offer qualifications in Business English; there are 157 Business English titles on UK publishers' lists; the International Association of Teachers of English as a Foreign Language (IATEFL) has a Business English special interest group with over one thousand members; and a new qualification in Business English teaching is under review. Yet, despite the enormous interest, Business English remains a little researched and ill-defined area of ESP. Johns (1986), comparing Business English with other varieties of ESP, wrote that 'the largest number of textbooks has been produced for business students, but EST (English for Science and Technology) dominates research'. Pickett (1986) wrote that 'There is no point… in pretending that Business English can be neatly categorized. It will always consist of what thousands of teachers are actually teaching.'
