This articles presents evidence from Spanish quantifier float that argues for the existence of PRO in control cluses and against teh NP chain analysis of Sportiche's (1988) theory of quatifier float. I Claim that possible and impossible floating XPs. Floating units larger than a Q are examined, and it is shown how control, agreemnet, and floating units interact. The view that emerges is that quantifier float is one particular case of a broader phenomenon having to do with interpretive chains, a view advocated by Milner (1987).
