The object of all air compressors is to raise the pressure of gas/air with the minimum expenditure of energy. An air compressor sucks the air from the atmosphere, com¬presses it and delivers the same air under high pressure to a storage vessel. Prom the storage vessel, it may be conveyed by the pipeline to a place, where the supply of compressed-air is required. Since the compression of air requires some work to be clone it therefore a compressor must be driven by some form of prime mover. The compressed air is used for many purposes such as for ope¬rating pneumatic drills, instrumentation in petroleum refinery, road drills, in starting and supercharging of; internal combustion engine, in gas turbine plants, jet engines and air motor etc. It is also utilised in the operation of lifts, rams, pumps and variety of other devices. |
