This paper is a critique of paralel distributed processing. It focuses particularly on the claim that schemata or schemata-like functions can be grown out of the purely mechanical associative connections. It also questions the idea of assigning weights which have nothing to do with the connections themselves but are built-in by the way data are fed into the system. Finally, the paper uses the Aristotelian ideas of psychic function as a parallel and parody of parallel distributed processing.
