Isi artikelThe topic of linguistic universals has been sharpened by Wierzbicka's contention that there are about ten words which have exact correlates in all languages. Thus the words in anyone language could serve as a universal metalinguistic vocabulary. By testing a sample of first person pronouns against the four indexical functions, some subset of which can be found in the usage of the first person, it is shown that there are several languages between which the first person is not perfectly translatable, lacking one or more of the full set of possible indexical functions. Alternative gender indexings by third person singular pronouns are also illustrated.
