Presuppositions are pre-conditions or assumptions or background knowledge assumed to be true of an utterance and thus belong to pragmatics. However, in this research, presuppositions are utilised to analyse taglines of movies. It is very common for a movie to have a tagline aside from the title of the movie itself. The presence of a tagline gives a glimpse of what the movie is about. It also functions to tickle the curiosity of the target audience so as to make them eventually curious and decide to watch the movie. Taglines appear in every genre of movies with their own distinctive characteristics. Thus, this particular research limits the scope of the research only on horror movies. It is owing to the fact that audience have a common perception that the genre is merely concerned with jump-scares due to the presence of apparition(s). The research therefore investigates how taglines of horror movies may ‘sound’ more than simply selling the promise of thrilling atmosphere. To materialise the goal, a number of linguistic university students are selected. They are assigned to read taglines of ten Hollywood horror movies and come up with as many presupposing sentences as they can. The collected presupposing sentences are then matched with the story of the movies to find out whether the taglines really can speak out the essence of the story or the other way around. All the results of the questionnaires are then collected and processed using a quantitative method to find out the percentage of the effectiveness of the taglines. One finding of the research is that an effective tagline of a horror movie is the one that applies lexical presupposition regardless of the tagline length. An effective tagline of a horror movie is also the one that earns a high percentage in terms of informing more about the story because of its explicitness.
