Isi artikelThe luminescence color of zinc oxide (ZnO) depends on particle size. Reducing particle size will shift the luminescence spectrum to shorter wavelengths. Various luminescence colows from blue to yellow - green are obtained if we produce ZnO nanoparticles at specified sizes below 6 nm diameter. We report here the production of ZnO and silica (SiO2) composite by a spray drying method, in which ZnO nanoparticles were trapped in the matrix of silica. Initially, a ZnO colloid consisting of naoparticles of ZnO were made by hydrolysis of zinc acetate. After ZnO nanoparticles reached a specified size by ageing, the colloid was mixed with a silica precursor (tetraethoxysilane, TEOS), followed by spray drying to form spherical powder of several hundreds of nanometer to several micrometers in sizes. Since ZnO nanoparticles were trapped in solid matric of silica, no further growing process occurs in ZnO particle size so that luminescence spectra become stable. Using ZnO colloids aged at different time (have different particle sizes), powders emitting various luminescent color have been obtaines.
