Isi artikelThis paper will very briefly introduce the two classical examples of problems in transliteration and translation in the study of Indonesian epigraphy which I will discuss at greater length in the presentation. First, I will revisit the recent controversy over the reading of a single word valaputra on King Pikatan’s funeral stele (AD 856) (Sundberg 2016, pp. 393-394).1 Second, in the presentation but not here in this Proceedings version of the paper, I will consider the remarkable case of the 7th Century Telaga Batu inscription which I propose is completely illegible to the naked eye as far as I can ascertain (for illustrations, see Susanti et. al. 2015, pp. 22-23). In revisiting these I will discuss some of the long term interpretive consequences of taking previous readings for granted. I propose that it could be useful for linguists outside the charmed Javanist epigraphic circle to weigh in on such transliterations and debates precisely because as such they would be dispassionate outsiders with no prior skin in the game. Through introducing these two striking instances to Indonesian linguists in this general context, and keeping in mind the make-over taking place at the National Museum of Indonesia (Zilberg 2017), the paper and presentation simply concludes that there is an interesting opportunity at hand for Asian linguists who might not have previously considered Indonesian museums and archaeological depositories as potentially exceptional sites for the study of historical linguistics.
