Isi artikelBahasa Isyarat Indonesia (BISINDO) has been used for around 60 years, and emerged naturally in the Indonesian deaf community. BISINDO is a distinct language with its own lexicon and grammar, which is different to bahasa Indonesia, and is used in urban centres across Indonesia. Although there has been little research on BISINDO to date, the research that has been conducted reveals fascinating examples of variation, particularly in semantic domains such as colour, kinship terms and numerals. This presentation focuses on the semantic domain of numerals, and begins by looking at how numerals are expressed cross-linguistically. Typological studies of sign languages reveal several strategies that regularly occur (namely lexical, digital, additive, multiplicative and numeral incorporation) along with two others (subtractive and spatial) that occur much rarer. In light of this framework, it is possible to examine numerals as they are expressed in varieties of BISINDO, based on spontaneous conversational data and elicitation that targets numeral forms. I suggest that numerals in BISINDO mostly use digital strategies, with a few examples of additive, multiplicative and numeral incorporation strategies. Intriguingly, however, these strategies often co-occur, with signers able to choose from different strategies. On the other hand, despite the profusion of some strategies, other strategies can be observed across Indonesia, including the ‘mata’ strategy. It is clear that much work remains in order to document strategies used to express numerals in different dialects of BISINDO. This is important for many reasons, not least because many strategies appear to be endangered. This kind of documentation sheds much needed light on the development of BISINDO since its emergence in the middle of the twentieth century, and also makes an important contribution to our understanding of how languages works.
