Isi artikelDeemed as bald-on-record Face Threatening Acts (FTA), directives have the potential to damage one’s interaction. However, directives can also be classified into one of the engagement markers writers use to interact with and involve readers into texts. Having this two-sided nature, directives seem to be overlooked in the literature. In this paper, we explore the roles of directives in academic writings from the Corpus of State University of Malang Indonesian Learners’ English (C-SMILE) with some comparisons to Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA). The ample uses of the textual imperative see as a form of directive suggest that we should be cautious in considering directives as a bald-on-record FTA, particularly those in writings within the context of the academe. Based on the existing data, we arrive at a point that see as a directive seems to lose its nature as a form of FTA. This situation is likely to be the case due to traditions in making citations, characteristics of the academic culture, and the fact that see also functions to demonstrate suggestion rather than instruction.
