Language is used by all people, which warrants that its preservation is also the responsibility of all. Since we live in a digital era, everyone is also responsible to preserve their languages digitally in the online environment. All languages and their communities need a decent digital environment in order to survive in the digital era. As postulated by Nettle and Romaine (2000: 79), a community can only function where there is a decent environment to live in and a sustainable economic system. Realizing the need for a decent and sustainable digital environment of these languages, Oxford University Press (OUP), a department of the University of Oxford, has initiated a programme called Oxford Global Languages (OGL) in 2015. The programme’s objective is to transform the experience of millions of people worldwide by making content in their language available in digital form, on websites, and in many different tools and services. Since OUP has been well-known for its dictionary products and realizing the fact that a dictionary is the main tool for language preservation, the OGL programme primarily provides online lexical content for 100 of the world’s languages and make it available to consumers, developers, and researchers.. One of the languages included in the programme is the Indonesian language. The website id.oxforddictionaries.com was launched in July 2016. This dictionary website is an environment where members of the Indonesian language community can develop the digital presence of the Indonesian language by adding words to the dictionary. According to Atkins and Rundell (2008: 2), a dictionary is a description of the vocabulary used by members of a speech community. This means that the language documentation should also be based on the description of the vocabulary which is actually used by the language community. In addition to providing a dictionary, the website also provides short articles on language tips written by prominent members of the language community (cf. Purwo’s article on Makna dan Maksud), and quizzes (e.g. idioms, spelling, and translations). Moreover, the website provides a forum where members of the Indonesian language community can ask questions related to language, and other members can provide their opinions or answers to the questions (e.g. the forum thread on Tanya Apa Saja). This will enable the sharing of linguistic knowledge within the language community. Consequently, the language community dictionary can become a means for documenting and sharing linguistic knowledge.
