Isi artikelPositivist historiographers of linguistics believe in the possibility of writing a single true history of linguistics. Alternatively, pluralist historiographers allow for different versions of linguistic history. However, the claims of both groups rest on unexplored assumptions about human communication, interpretation, authorial intention, and representation. These claims are evaluated in light of recent theoretical developments in semiotics, hermeneutics, history, and linguistics. The pluralist conception of linguistic historiography is supported by these developments whereas the positivists' position turns out to be untenable because they adhere to the conduit metaphor and ignore the semiotic, dialogic, and historical dimensions of interpretation.
