Saussure's view on linguistic geography are not-as the position of the chapter entitle 'Linguistique geographique' in the Cours de linguistique generale might appear to suggerst-a mere appendage to his proposals for the science of linguistics. On the contrary, they constitute an important part of Saussure's argument and must be seen in the context of the debate about the work of Gillieron in the early decades of the 20th century.
