Travis (1989) has proposed a set of parameters to control certain aspects of word order. Specifically, she is concerned with the position, within a maximal projection of object NP, argument PP (=PP1) and adjunct PP (+PP2) each relative to the position of the head. Her aim is to show how parameters can "account for the diversity of word order in natural language while being restrictive enough to provide an explanatory account", and she explicitly contrasts this approach with a phrase structure approach.
