Isi artikelGenre based writing is a way to practice to write in current context. Some students have difficulties in writing because they do not know how to start their writings. They also do not fully understand that in genre based writing, a text should contain schematic structures and linguistic features. This research paper investigates how a review template helps the students write text easily and build the students’ creativity of a book they reviewed. A book review template is a tool to help the students write better and correctly referring to the schematic structures as well as its linguistic feautures. This research is qualitative one because it describes the students’ review writings focusing on their text structure awareness. The data were gained from the observation in an advanced Genre-based writing class at faculty of Humanities Dian Nuswantoro University which consists of 25 students and their review writing results. Futhermore, in genre-based approach four learning cycles introduced by Callaghan and Rothery (1988) were applied. Then, in analyzing the students’ writings, Systemic Functional Linguistics is applied in term of schematic structure and linguistic feautures used in order to reveal students’ review writing development. The result shows that in implementing the learning cycle most students are enthusiastically involved in the teaching process. All of the students have already followed the schematic structure and linguistic features of the text. Moreover, their writings show that they can enhance the result of their writing systematically and they become more critical because in reviewing the text, their opinions are the strongest point.
