The use of conjunctive adverbials in the native and non-native writers’ theses: similarities and differences

Conjunctive adverbials are essential connecting device in both written and spoken register. They guide readers and listeners in the directions of text and therefore enable them to understand the organization of ideas at the discourse level (Leech & Svartvik, 2002). Previous research in EFL contexts has revealed a contradictory results regarding the frequency, functions, and position of conjunctive adverbials in academic genres, such as undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate writing. The present study therefore extends this line of research by conducting an in-depth analysis of the use of conjunctive adverbials with regard to the distribution of individual conjunctive adverbials, the semantic categories and syntactic positions of conjunctive adverbials, as well as the position patterns in both native and non-native writers’ theses. The findings show that there was no significant difference in terms of distribution of individual conjuncive adverbials (frequency) and semantic categories (functions) of conjunctive adverbials; however, the preference of the devices was different in the two groups’ writing. Concerning the position and position patterns, it was found that non-native writers predominantly used initial conjunctve adverbials, while the native writers used more medial conjunctive adverbials with more various position patterns.
