Isi artikelThe study entitled “An Analysis of Domestication strategy in Translating Cultural words in Dan Brown’s “Angels and Demons”.The objective of this study is to reveal the domestication translation categories and to elaborate the cultural terms that are found in the novel. It applies a qualitative descriptive appromach; hence, the analysis is purely focused on the data findings. The significance of the study is that Angels & Demons shares many stylistic literary elements with its sequel, such as conspiracies of secret societies, a single-day time frame, and the Catholic Church. Ancient history, architecture, and symbolism are also heavily referenced throughout the book. Introducing such elements to be translated is significant for translators. Therefore, the study of the translation of cultural information in the literary works is both necessary and important. The study uses theories proposed by Newmark’s (1988) cultural terms classification and Pederson’s (2005) continuum theory as the tools and Venuti’s foreigization and domestication’strategy (2004). The cultural specific words cited in Newmark consist of ecology, material culture, social culture, social organization, gesture and habit. The cultural words described in the study are only in social culture since terms related to social cultural are significant to study. The types of cultural words in social culture are related to job, position, kinship, and leisure. The research is intended to find (1) what the cultural-specific words in social culture that are domesticated in translation of “Angels and Demons” into Indonesian and (2) what translation procedures are frequent in translation of “Angels and Demons”. Based on the analysis, the result of the study indicates that (1) the cultural-specific words in social culture that are domesticated in translation of “Angels and Demons” into English include job (e.g priest- pendeta, authorities-polisi, superior- atasan, catholic monk- biarawan katolik, docent- pemandu wisata, etc), position (infirmary personnel-perawatnya, upper echelon Mason- anggota tingkat atas kelompok Mason, etc), kinship (e.g old fart kakek kakek, His holinessYang Mulia Paus, son Nak, etc), leisure (e.g racquetball- squash, toss lempar-lemparan, high diving- kegiatan loncat indah, etc). (2) the translation procedures found in the research are equivalent(e.g the big boy-bocah besar ini, Holy Ground tanah suci, a guardian angel- malaikat penjaga,Mathematicians ahli matematika, Religious symbologist ahli simbologi agama, etc), and globalization ( e.g nonscientist- orang awam, facificist- orang-orang yang cinta damai). The most procedure of social culture translation found in the novel is equivalent.
