People are not perfect. It is very common to see people make some mistakes unconsciously or consciously. In order to fix the situations or problems they have, apology might be one of the solutions. They should apologize to the people directly. So that, people feel less hurt and upset. Besides, it is also useful to maintain the relationship among people and to avoid the potential conflict. As a result, people live peacefully in a community or a society they live in. The harmonious relationship itself is closely related with politeness where speaker and hearer try to soften and weaken the utterances. In addition, both speaker and hearer can interpret the utterances well. Brown and Levinson (1978) divide politeness into two major types. First, positive politeness is a situation of human beings wants to be liked, appreciated, admired, respected, or to be accepted in a society. However, negative politeness a situation of human beings wants not to be requested, imposed, insulted, ordered, etc. Therefore, both faces need to be saved or maintained. The apology itself according to Trosborg (1995) is the expression to show our regret for making people less angry, sad, upset, etc. In order to be accepted, the apology should be polite or mild. Moreover, it needs to be sincere. Trosborg (1995) divides the apology into several strategies. There are opting out, evasive strategies, indirect apologies, direct apologies remedial support. Furthermore, these strategies are divided into other subcategories. This research is qualitative and quantitative research. Furthermore, quantitative research is involved in order to count the percentage of the apology strategies produced by English teachers. In addition, the data are obtained from ten teachers of LBPP LIA Mercu Buana. They are requested to fill in the DCT (Discourse of Completion Test) form consisting of four different given scenarios or situations which the participants having different types of the hearers. After the data are gathered, the utterances are categorized and analyzed using apology strategies proposed by Trosborg (1995). The purpose of this study is to find out what strategies are commonly used by English teacher of LBPP LIA. The result of this study suggests the tendency of apology strategies that frequently used by the teachers. Therefore, the result can show whether the teachers are polite or not.
