Isi artikelSeveral factors can hinder Indonesian English Learners (henceforth, IELs) from being able to produce English sounds accurately, one of which is the differences in the phonetic categories of L1 and L2 (Flege 1987, 1995). English and Indonesian have different sound inventories. In English, the sounds [i,u] and are distinctive categories; on the other hand, in Indonesian, the pairs and are used interchangeably (Dardjowidjojo 2008). This research is intended to investigate the acquisition of several English sounds by IELs. Several theories have been proposed to account for how L2 learners acquire the L2 sounds. This study focuses on the following two theories: Contrastive Analysis Hypothesis (CAH) by Lado (1957, as mentioned by Zampini, 2008) and the Speech Learning Model (SLM) by Flege (1995). CAH predicts that IELs will be able to produce the sounds accurately early. In contrast, in line with the assumption of equivalence classification, SLM predicts that even the more experienced IELs will still have problem in producing the sounds accurately. To verify which of the above two contrasting theories can explain the acquisition of the aforementioned English sounds by IELs better, this study conducts a production test adapted from Flege (1987) on two groups of IELs, i.e. the experienced and low-experienced IELs. The test requires the participants in the two groups to produce the target sounds, i.e., when they occur inside a word, respectively.
