In business, entrepreneurs among Asean’s members may wish to document their business transactions or legal relationship of other fields of law among them. To be more authentic, the parties may desire to formulate their mutual understanding into a deed of agreement in Indonesian language before a notary. Otherwise, the applicable law requires certain agreement be drawn in a notarial deed in Indonesian. Under Law on Notaries, the notary must ensure that every appearer and witness comprehend the content of the deed in Indonesian. For such purpose, the Law allows the service of an official translator to be used. The Law, however, does not further provide the detailed requirements for appointment of the official translator. It indeed opens wider opportunities for the so called official translators to provide their professional services. For the sake of professionalism on both the official translators and the notaries’ sides, there must be a definition and limitation for the provision of service by the official translator to cater the notary’s need. The purpose of this presentation is to give insights to translators on the opportunities and what should be prepared by translators before taking such opportunities.
