Isi artikelThis article is aimed at (i) investigating types of self-corrections done by the student translators, and (ii) finding out how self-corrections contribute to the quality of translation product. This is a descriptive qualitative study on the English-Indonesian translation process done by student-translators. Translog software (Jakobsen, 1999; Jakobsen & Schou, 1999) was used as an instrument to find out self-corrections during the translation process. This study took three students of Master Degree Program of Linguistics Department majoring translation studies at University of Sumatera Utara without any professional experience on translation business as the participants. The participant selection criteria considered linguistic competence including Test of Bahasa Indonesia proficiency (UKBI), Test of English proficiency (TOEFL), and Test of typing speed by using TQ (TypingQueen) typing test. The participants translated two English texts into Bahasa Indonesia (their native language). The data were collected using recording techniques. The translation processses were recorded by using Translog and the use of online dictionaries and resources was allowed. This study found that (i) the student translators did eight types of self-corrections, i.e. deletion, substitution, spelling correction, return correction, addition, meaning correction, capitalization correction, and grammar correction; (ii) the student translator spending more time in doing self-corrections produced better quality of translated text. It can be concluded that doing self-corrections trains student translators to be always careful in translation process because a small mistake, even a silly mistake such as misspelling/mistyping, can influence the quality of the translated text.
