Translating children’s literature from foreign language into Indonesian has been done through many years by practitioners. In translating children’s literature, translator may encounter common problems appearing in translating other literary texts. One of the problems being discussed in this paper is translating slang words from English into Indonesian, taken from a children novel entitled Auggie & Me (Three Wonder Stories) written by R.J. Palacio (2015). The cultural and linguistic gap between the Source Text (ST) and the Target Text (TT) has challenged translator in dealing with slang words which are hardly found in children’s literature. Therefore, a proper strategy is needed in translating the slang words in order to achieve the goals (skopos). In this paper, domesticating is dominant in translating the ST due to the acceptance motive considering the target readers from all ages. Also, semantic-communicative method is applied due to educational reason. Various translations techniques from the experts, such as Newmark, Baker, and Hoed, are used to get the semantic congruity. Moreover, interviews have been conducted to several school students regarding the equivalence. In translating literary texts, especially children’s literature, a translator is not only rendering messages from ST to TT, but is also demanded to produce high creativity to find the appropriate equivalence.
