Isi artikel
In this paper I will be concerned with when-clauses that do not refer to time but somehow restrict the scope of the predication. The following sentences provide some illustrations: (l) (a) A person is a pacifist when he is against any form of violence. (b) People cannot be happy when they are unemployed. (c) A 15-year-old boy is small for his age when he wears size 12 clothes. (d) In many of the cases observed the wife was easily depressed when the husband held an important office. (e) People are orphans when their parents , are not alive. (Carlson, 1979, p. 69). In none of these sentences does the when-clause refer to time. Intuitively, they seem to describe the cases of which the statement made in the head clause is held to be true. They therefore restrict the scope of the predication, and for that reason I am going to call them 'restrictive when-clauses' .
