Maori are discriminated against at disproportionate rates to non-Maori. Pakeha who have invested in relationships with Maori through learning te reo Maori (Maori language) and their responses to discrimination are the focus of this research. Interviews with 13 Pakeha (New Zealand Europeans) indicated that they were critically aware of discrimination toward Maori and responded to discrimination in a variety of ways. This research highlights how some Pakeha who are developing relationships with Maori through Maori language learning may become aware of the inequalities that exist between Maori and Pakeha. This study explores how Pakeha language learners of te reo Maori contribute to creating positive change for bicultural relationships in New Zealand.
