Kaizen principles, particularly the idea of elimination of MUDA (Waste) can be very effectively used in Unit Overhauls of a power plant optimizing overhaul time without loosing the quality. The kaizen team of NTPC-Simhadri has implemented this practice in Boiler and LP turbine overhauls. The methodology adopted was brainstorming the entire set of activities during a Gemba Kaizen Workshop with active participation of all the teams carrying out the works. A number of recommendations of the workshop have been implemented in the overhauls. The overhauls were completed with significant improvement in time while also identifying further scope in reduction of time.
