Isi artikelIndore is the business capital of State of Madhya Pradesh with 2 million plus population. It is the 14th largest city of India and growing at an unprecedented scale. This large city did not have any organized Public Transport System till 2005, when I joined as a Collector and District Magistrate of Indore. The main stay of public transport were three tyred black smoke spewing tempos which were running without any schedules or organised stops. Lack of organised Public Transport System had resulted in the highest density of two wheeler ownerships as compared to other cities of the country. The roads were unsafe, highly polluted and congested. Indore has always been the commercial capital of M.P. and an important centre for education. This has facilitated fast growth of the city, both physically and commercially. According to Census 2001, Indore supports a population of 2.72 million with a decadal growth of more that 50%. It has more than 3.30 lakh workers with 63.4% of the workforce in the tertiary sector. This is reflected in the voluminous increase in the vehicular population in the city with corresponding increase in problems of traffic management, levels of pollution and congestion. Hence, an urgent need for an efficient mass transit system was felt.
