Climate change has emerged as a contentious environmental issue, occurring due to increasing concentration of green house gases in atmosphere since the pre industrial times. Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) is a market based mechanisms specified under Kyoto protocol to UNFCCC allowing a country with an emission-reduction or emission-limitation commitment under the Kyoto Protocol (Annex 1 Party) to implement an emission-reduction project in developing countries. This paper presents a case study of a biomass based CDM project activity undertaken at Sukhbir Agro Energy Limited (SAEL) in an economically backward area in village, Fatehullahpur of Ghazipur district, Uttar Pradesh, India. The project management has ensured a very high operational efficiency and transparency in educationally poor part of country to get recognition as CDM project. Project activity reduces Green House Gas (GHG) emissions by displacing the fossil fuel dominated grid electricity with renewable biomass residues based electricity and will also help meet the heat requirement rice mill and solvent extraction plant.
