This paper discusses the reduction in ‘sticker’ defect in automotive grades produced through batch annealing route at Cold Rolling Mill in Tata Steel. Surface aspect is the most critical quality aspect for automotive customers. At Tata Steel, ‘sticker’ marks on the surface of cold rolled closed annealed (CRCA) strips is the biggest challenge in surface quality. The paper gives an overview of process adopted in significantly reducing sticker defect. The paper also highlights the use of several problem solving and TQM tools in solving chronic problems at Tata Steel. Total Quality Management Tools like Pareto, Shainin Techniques, Binary logistic regression predominant factor analysis and fish bone diagram were used at several stages of the problem solving like, problem identification, defect characterization, identification of part number, finding out important factors effecting defect, validation of hypothesis and improvements made towards the end of project.
