Isi artikelSmall and medium enterprises (SMEs) form the backbone of Indian economy and play an important role in its socio-economic growth due to their inherent competitive advantage of size, scale and decision making process. However, in the emerging business environment, SMEs may not sustain their inherent competitive advantage mainly through entrepreneurial spirit. The Organization will play an increasingly important role for sustenance and growth of business. The paper discusses issues such as - the key drivers of SME business, the mindset of the Owner Manager towards the organization, the way organization is viewed and managed by its stakeholders, risks associated with change and the impact of quality and productivity Improvement Initiatives on individuals, teams and organization. There is huge potential lying dormant within the SME organization which can be accessed and leveraged in the interest of the business. The paper makes an attempt to identify the physical and mental barriers prevalent at all levels of management in SME that vitiate all attempts of transforming the organization. The paper also discusses the relevance of the Excellence Model framework for the SMEs in building an organization that is responsive to the call of business in the emerging globalized economy.
