Isi artikelThis analytical synthesis paper reviews the historical and philosophical development of Kolb's Experiential Learning Model (ELM). The work focuses on the foundational research of Dewey, Lewin and Piaget. Personal learning experiences are placed within the ELM model context in order to provide relevance. This paper finds that the ELM model was built over decades, across disparate fields, and ultimately the behaviorist philosophy of Hegel. ELM as a reflective, non-linear model of learning has the potential to be effective in a corporate training or academic e-learning environment. This paper provides both an historical and philosophical understanding of the ELM. This understanding is necessary in order to effectively implement these models into curricula. Even though these models are widely known, it has been challenging to implement them effectively into the educational process. Key challenges in this area relate to model implementation, education of educators, and usage of models in personal and professional assessment.
