Isi artikelThis paper attempts to present a comparative picture of two important segments of urban informal sector, namely street vendors and home-based enterprise. The study highlights demographic profile, nature of the occupation and the business delivery practices of the two segments. The study is exploratory in nature and has been undertaken in Nagaon district of Assam, India. The data the study found that there is no marked difference between street vendors and HBEs in terms of average monthly business expenditure, daily sales or net earnings per day etc. Both depend on money lenders to finance their business. Therefore the study concluded with the remark that though it was assumed that informal sector is heterogeneous in nature and hence different policy interventions would be required for each of the groups within the informal sector, but this study reveals that street vendors and HBEs are homogeneous in terms of their nature of occupation and working conditions. Hence Indian government can adopt similar policy interventions (credit facilities, legal status etc.) to facilitate these subsistence entrepreneurs.
