This study focus is on identifying and prioritizing the barriers to internationalization among SMEs of India. Export barriers prevent SMEs from engaging in international activities and affect the performance of a firm that has engaged in export activities. Though research literature on barriers to internationalization is extensive, but need an overview about the barriers faced by SMEs of emerging economies. However, it is also important to understand the socio-economic circumstances of SMEs before prescribing any measures to overcome the barriers. Since, resources to overcome the barriers are limited thus need careful application. From this perspective the barrier prioritization is significant to tackle them effectively and to achieve the best possible outcome. Further, the barriers are prioritized based on the perception and experience of entrepreneurs, the main stakeholders of SMEs, using analytic hierarchy process (AHP). Based on primary data gathered from 25 internationalized SMEs of engineering industry in the Bangalore city region of India revealed that functional (internal barrier) and task (external barrier) have emerged as the top impediments to internationalization.
