The purpose of this paper is to identify current trends and opportunities in the medical tourism industry of Malaysia, and to explore the critical success factors for Malaysia’s medical tourism destinations and providers. This paper will explore recent research which challenges common myths and misconceptions about the market for medical tourism. Current global trends affecting the industry and trends within the industry will be explored in order to identify some of the risks and opportunities facing medical tourism destinations and providers. The information gained through this study should help hospitality and tourism professionals, medical facilities and destination marketers to focus their efforts on the most lucrative segments of the market, and to be more effective at developing and serving the medical tourism segment of their customer base. Some of the problems facing the market can be avoided by studying the factors which have led to success or failure in other medical tourism destinations. The objective of this paper is to examine the opportunities and trends of Malaysia’s medical tourism industry and to formulate the key success factors that bring forward the best results economically. Information for the study was gathered from articles and publications from various sources countries based on the notability of their medical tourism explorations. The contents analysis on this information is used to review the medical tourism in Malaysia.
