It is recognised that corporate governance is culturally related, but there is less evidence on how it impacts the teaching of the subject. This paper contributes to the debate by examining the pedagogic issues when teaching international students at the graduate level in a Canadian university. A total of 72 students completed a questionnaire and this paper discusses the opinions of those students. Although the majority of students did not consider that corporate governance should be abandoned in the pursuit of profits, a dilemma arose concerning the issues of Corporate Governance responsibility and economic progress. When asked whether China should focus on economic progress before Corporate Governance, almost 20% of the students did not voice an opinion and the rest were evenly divided in their opinions. Using the Mann-Whitney test, evidence which is statistically significant at the 5% level showed that students with prior business knowledge are more likely to view the responsibility and implementation of Corporate Governance as resting with the individual managers. They argued that the solution to good business practice and corporate governance could not be found entirely by rigid government regulations. The research captured the ambiguities and contradictions of debating Corporate Governance in specific economic environments.
