In the past fifteen years the economic relationship between Indonesia and South Korea has grown rapidly. There are many Koreans who set up their businesses in Jakarta. Many of them bring their family with them and send their children to schools or universities in Jakarta. A large number of Korean students have joined BIPA (Indonesian as a Foreign Language) program at the Faculty of Humanities, the University of Indonesia to study Indonesian language. Since 2008 some of these BIPA students have enrolled English Study Program after completing one year BIPA program. It requires a good command of English to study in this program because the medium of instructions and subject content are in English. Unfortunately, most of these students have been reported to experience considerable difficulty in their studies in general, particularly in their English language class, which, because of university regulations, impacts on other courses they take in the study program. Some of them have also been reported to lack motivation in their studies. This research examines the aspects affecting South Korean students’ achievement in learning English in English Study Program at the Faculty of Humanities, the University of Indonesia. The data are obtained from questionnaires, interviews and classroom observations. The results reveal that the factors influencing the students’ achievement are prior learning experiences and students’ ability to adapt with the new environment. It is hoped that the outcomes of this research will give valuable input to teaching staff, academic administrators, and institutions dealing with international students.
