Isi artikelThe notion of sociolinguistic competence is explicitly written in the document of Indonesian EFL curriculum as one of standard competence that must be achieved by learners. However, the practices conducted by EFL teachers in enhancing and promoting sociolinguistic competence especially in classroom activities do not perform as it supposed to be i.e. providing opportunity to improve sociolinguistic competence. As emergence of CLT approach has been widely known by Indonesian English teachers, the significance of sociolinguistic competence must be emphasized to cover all aspects of competence in CLT requirements. In fact, the EFL teaching and learning processes is inclined to be more on the achievement of language components such as structures and vocabulary. As results, Indonesian EFL learners posed well-built grammar and lexical competence but rare to actively communicate either with teacher and classmate. Contrastively, many scholars had conducted research in the area EFL setting by goal to improve sociolinguistic competence under variety of scopes. Zayed (2014) for instance, investigating Jordanian EFL teachers’ and students’ practice of five speech acts. He found that EFL teachers and students had no proper practice of any of the speech acts although the teachers practiced the speech acts of greeting, request, and thanking better than the speech acts of apology and compliment, and the students practiced the speech act of greeting better than the other speech acts. Other researchers such as Juppe (1997), Selin (2014), Yu (2005) and Regan (2012) shared the same signal that the significance of sociolinguistic competence is one of the key in determining the successfulness of English learning either in EFL or ESL context. The aim of this paper is to discuss relevant theories both from empirical finding from researchers and discussion of literatures of sociolinguistic competence. The literature study is used as method in this study. The literatures were collected to select the most relevant and latest studies in order to address the significance of revitalizing sociolinguistic competence as one of learning outcome in Indonesian EFL context.
